Innovation Plaza

This is a project of redesigning a two
block section
of Gainesville. The site is located directly in between the University of
Florida's campus and Downtown Gainesville, the site is a recently demolished
hospital. "Innovation Hub" consists of a
business park for new business and inspiring inventors, for both graduates of
the nearby University but also to attract people from out of area. The goal of
this project is to stimulate the economy
of Gainesville and further the University's reputation for innovation
in all
fields of study. This project was a 5 person team, each
person was given a section of the overall renovation of Innovation Hub to design and follow
through to the construction. I focused on Innovation Plaza: |
Innovation Plaza Serves as the Northwestern entrance point to
Innovation Hub. It is a linear space separating two five story buildings.
The space was designed for heavy pedestrian movement, while also offering a
place for gathering or to offer a seat for a break. The plaza planting
design utilizing all native plants to conserve water and minimize use of
chemicals and maintenance. Special attention to the design of Innovation
Hub was given the anticipated high volume of stormwater. |
While
bioswales and retention ponds were designed also SW 2nd Avenue, Innovation
Plaza employs a raised central boardwalk to collect and mitigate captured
water flow. On either side of the boardwalk are no curb planters and
gabion structures to provide the least resistance in between water and being
absorbed into the earth below. The permeable gabion structures are be
constructed from recycled concrete from the sites demolish
of
previous structures.
